Energy issue in Korea

Korea barely has natural resources. Therefore, Korea is one of major energy importers, importing nearly all of its oil needs and being the second-largest importer of natural gas in the world.
Most energy production depends on fossil resources. So, Korean economy is easily affected by the price of oil.

Nowadays, Korea is developing alternative resources to reduce a dependence on fossil fuel. Some of them are solar power, wind plant, and tidal power plant. Especially, tidal power plant fits well to Korean geography. In the west coast of Korea, there's a huge difference in sea level during tides. Using this difference, we can produce electricity. So, this is a potential energy resource for future.

In Korea, people waste a huge amount of energy without concerning about lack of energy. However, energy in Korea is not abundant. So, government have made some laws to regulate energy consumption.

  1. In Belgium, we have kind of the same problem. We also have almost no natural resources. Well, we do have lots of coal, but its use is decreasing. You do see a lot of solarpannels in Belgium. The government promoted them by giving money to everyone who placed them. We also get power trough wind energy
-At the start of 2012, there were 498 operational wind turbines in Belgium, with a capacity of 1080 MW.[15] The amount of electricity generated from wind energy has surpassed 2 TWh per year.[16]

On Sunday 6 February 2011, 12% of the consumed electricity was generated by wind turbines. Due to high winds. [16]

There are seven large-scale offshore wind farm projects. Thorntonbank Wind Farm (325 MW, of which 215 MW is installed) and Belwind Wind Farm (330 MW) are operational. The other five are in various stages of planning

We are trying to decrease our need of nuclear energy by closing the nuclearl plants. But it will probably take a long time before they're all shut down...

Finally, we also waste a lot of energy. There are constantly running campaignes to raise awareness for the problem. They can be local initiatifs or bigger ones.

    1. We also produce lots of energy by nuclear plants. But as you can see the case in Japan, nuclear plants are too dangerous. If radiation active waste is leaked, environment near nuclear plants becomes hell. So, many people are against nuclear energy. Therefore, government keeps trying to reduce dependence on nuclear energy.
